General Discussions / Re: Thoughts on the 3rd album
« on: September 02, 2018, 08:56:16 PM »
Well, I think - having listened to Anna’s new album many times - that my ratings would be:

As a man (9/10)
Hunter (9/10)
Don’t Beat the Girl... (8/10)
Indies or Paradise  (9/10)
Swimming  Pool (10/10)
Alpha (8/10)
Chain (9/10)
Wish (9/10)
Away (10/10)
Eden (9/10)

But, of course, taste is a very personal thing. I think, however, that it’s a very fine album indeed....

News & Interviews / Re: Hazel Iris EP ' Golden ' out today...

Yes, if you haven’t got a copy or downloaded it yet, then do so. It’s really good!

I suppose that if ‘Indies or Paradise’ is the new album title, then it bears a sort of resemblance to one of Anna’s favourite records, ‘Heaven or Las Vegas’ by the Cocteau Twins. However, it does strike me as being a bit  clumsy for an album title..

Sorry: I've only just got to this: please, if you're in or around London, then Hazel and Mally put on a truly marvellous show! And Hazel has announced more shows.

Anna's Music / Re: Lyrics Anna's songs in Der Sandmann

Sorry! Spell check or something went wild with my last. It should of course be "comic book",  "composer" etc!

Dear Welsh Corgi: well, what a revelation! Thank you. Re the probably typo: yes, it probably is - Lois Lane as a commit book heroine, perhaps linking to Jasper Johns and Rauschenberg as 'pop art' figures. However, acompuser/conductorcalled Louis Lane died last year...

More widely, on the lyrics, and of course we have to bear to n mind that these were written for a stage play, butmaybeit's possible to see here Anna's interest in bed, and sleeping, and her intimate, one-to-one framing of songs. There's maybe a road here, as in I'll Be Your Man...Also, maybe, Anna's interest in weather, particularly rain and hurricanes and nighttime...death (ash to ash- if  not Bowie!) ... trains (Carry me Over) etc.

Anyway, who knows!

Thanks for posting the MP3 link. Maybe it would be good if those who haven't had a chance to buy the record but who have downloaded the MP3 version donated (if they can afford it) something to charity in return? Just a thought.

By the way, I think that it's  a really good recording, despite the obvious omissions.

Great video and interview, Michael. Where did you find that? Thanks for sharing!

Yes, I have to agree with Dogandclowns that it is a bit odd it wasn't shared via Anna's social media.

Yes, a bit odd, but not totally unexpected, the way that Anna's own social media sights are not exactly up to the mark!

Yes, hi Betty.

My thoughts -  for what their worth - about the EP. After repeated listenings I'm  starting to come around to Whip. I still think that IT is the best thing on it. Eliza is good, but I do wish that Anna had recorded this as a slower,  more sensitive piece, rather as she's performed it at least a couple of times live. I still think that Desire ends with too much stuff going on around Anna's brilliant vocals.

Well, on the whole, pretty good I think: Anna certainly looked and sounded good. I think that the end of Desire on the EP sounds a bit forced, a bit desperate on the part of the choir. I reserve judgement on the two new ones, but IT is superb, I think. As to the show: I think it's a bad sign when the models look vaguely embarrassed. Also, of course, very frustrating, since the footage concentrated on the clothes, rather than Anna!

But, do we think that Anna was well advised  to act as the background music to a fashion show to present new material?  How many new people will she attract this way?

News & Interviews / Mally's birthday
« on: November 06, 2016, 11:12:01 AM »
I am posting this on behalf of a whole bunch of us (including Michael, Sabrina, Eszter and Brian), who would like to wish Mally well on her birthday, but I'm sure that everyone reading this would like to be included! So, Happy Birthday Mally. Mally is obviously a very considerable musical talent. Also,  those of us who've had the great pleasure of meeting Mally can vouch for what a really generous and pleasant (I'm trying to avoid the word 'nice', but that's what she appears to be, in the best possible sense) person she is. Let's hope that we all have a chance to see her on stage before too long.

I fear that the EP may indeed be another (distraction from/strategy for coping with) if not a complete writer's block, then at least Anna's rejection of material she deems as 'sub-standard'. I do hope that I'm wrong, and the EP presages a wonderful full-length album of Anna's own material, to be out soon, but I have my doubts. However, an EP of material written and recorded originally by others on the theme of 'masculinity' is very enticing. Maybe the start of a series of EPs in which Anna takes on the big issues through song. Why not?

News & Interviews / Re: Visions Festival - Hackney, UK - August 6, 2016

Nothing to add to Michael G's excellent review. I absolutely agree that the venue was wrong: too small, too hot, and the sound quality wasn't good - from where I was standing, right in front of Anna, just one person back -the drums seemed too far up in the mix, and while they didn't drown out Anna, they did - a little - overpower Mally. Anna's staring and fixing on one lucky audience member was spell-binding! No Carry Me Over though, and this - apparently - had also been dropped from the set at Hertfordshire. Maybe Anna feels that she doesn't want another big guitar passage, and has dropped it for that reason. Whatever, personally I would rather have this rather than Jezebel (even as an encore), since it's my favourite track off the last album and has been a real live highlight.
But, yes, it was a very good weekend, partly because of the gig, but also because of the excellent company. Soon - I'm sure we all hope - Anna will publish some more dates, and - hope against hope - will announce a forthcoming third album. Maybe ...

Thanks for the set list Luckythelab. Interesting that Desire was the final number. So, no Jezebel?
