Performances / Classic gigs

Are there any Anna gigs that you've been to that you think will pass down into Calvi folklore, for good or bad? Which ones will be spoken of in revered hush in a generation down the line "daddy cricket, you mean you were there?"

Well, each one I've been to feels like an event... Pissing rain at Somerset House, new album preview at Wilton's, Dan's last show, troxy followed by solo show, two gigs with choir and orchestra... Any better than that? I wish I'd seen some earlier ones, and I'm lead to believe some were better music-wise (Troxy show was the finest musically I've seen). I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Performances / Support acts

Gwilym Gold at the southbank gig got me thinking... What's the worst support act Anna has ever had? I can only remember Anna Meredith and Bill Ryder-Jones as being ant good... I Have a Tribe was surely number 1 until that atrocity last night. Any others?

Anna's Music / Best "post One Breath" Anna music

So, we basically have a few covers and a few collaborations. I'm talking strange weather, Marianne faithful and Noah and the whale. What do people think? Biding her time? Having fun? Procrastinating? Musical progress?

For me, nothing has really stood out. I wish it had, but I haven't really been feeling it. I want a new album! That Marianne faithful track was cool though

Performances / Guitar Heroes
« on: September 21, 2014, 07:59:18 PM »
I remember Anna saying that there weren't any guitar heroes around any more, except Jack White. That may be true... Though the only innovative guitarists I can really think of these days are Anna and St Vincent. I quite like White's new solo stuff, but he doesn't really push the boat out.

What do people think about the whole guitar hero thing? I mean people often talk about Hendrix, Clapton, beck, Page... Then any amount of hard rock poodle haired types.

Most of those in the above list bore me to tears, except Hendrix who is probably my favourote all time artist. I don't mind a bit of Led Zeppelin either.

So why do the ladies sound so fresh and exciting, whereas the traditional male artists sound so dull, for all the theatrics?

I think the difference is Jimi had a soul, as well as a jazz and blues background. Anna has a classical background. St Vincent puts a lot of humour into her work. Its more about the overall sound rather than showing off.

Sorry its a bit incoheherent... Anyone have any thoughts?

One Breath / One Breath now the dust has settled

What do people think now the Album has been out ages? Does it have the longevity of its predecessor? Do you still listen to it? What's your favourite song?

For various reasons I've had a long break from it all, but after a fresh listen Sing To Me is still epic

So what do we think? Anna is on some pretty long odds, and has been nominated before. Anyone giving her a chance? I've tried listening to a few of the other acts and Anna is clearly the best!

Thoughts? I think it's a bit underwhelming, but perhaps I'm missing the point. Got plenty of anna in it, which can only be a good thing!

Forum Suggestions & Feedback / Community section

Is there much need to have the community section "members only"? Perhaps only some of it needs to be. Most doesn't have anything personal on it and it sells this forum quite well as it's original. At least, electriclight's stuff is :)

Just a thought.

Past Projects / Cheap Hotel
« on: December 12, 2013, 07:24:52 PM »
This needed to be done I guess... So were they the prelude to greatness, a band of great potential that enabled Anna to earn her stripes and gain valuable experience.

Or were they a bit crap.

I reckon they were a bit crap personally, but had a couple of decent songs. Never going to make it... But without them I reckon Anna Calvi wouldn't have happened. For that we can be grateful!

Performances / Dream duets
« on: December 09, 2013, 12:00:32 AM »
I haven't quite got the patience to post a video, but I've just listened to Tina and Ike Turner singing Proud Mary. The idea of Anna covering that song - faithfully, with the slow bit and the "rough bit" with Anthony from Anthony and the Johnsons, Beth Ditto or, why not, me, fills me with too much glee.

What else who you actually kill people in order to see?

General Discussions / Anna Calvi Facts
« on: November 30, 2013, 09:19:37 PM »
1.   As with Alice Cooper, Anna Calvi is the band’s name and not Anna’s real name, though she has since changed it.  Her birth name was Tackaberry McAdoo.
2.   Anna’s previous band Cheap Hotel had to change their name from Shite Airline after a trade mark dispute with Ryannair.
3.   Despite liberal use of the F-and S-words, Anna has only ever used the C-word once, after being compared to PJ Harvey 37 times in one afternoon.
4.   Anna is so short her feet are clearly visible in her passport photo.
5.   Anna’s record for holding her breath is 3 minutes and 8 seconds, attained when she was only 2 after her father refused to buy her the Frank Zappa album “Weasels Ripped My Flesh”. He relented after she turned blue.
