Friday night was a great triumph for Mally Harpaz for the launch of her new album " Zoom in Zoom out" and the release of James Marples EP  " Go Quietly ".

A large crowd filled the old cinema to see a display of amazing musicians perform.  Mally , Hazel Iris, Aurora Del Rio, Hana Pirahna,  Iain Ross,  Katherine Christie Evans , James Marples,  etc.

And to cap it all Anna Calvi herself made a special guest appearance, and she was incredible  :) ( as usual !! )

There was free popcorn and an electrifying atmosphere .

Great to see so many Cult members there, and we will all remember this fabulous night for a long time...

Mally's album is beautifully produced and superb.  Proof of what an incredible musician she is.

   Available on Bandcamp. .......

Will also be on Spotify etc. from April 13.

Hopefully there will be some more Blind Dog Gigs coming up soon...

On October 25 its the much anticipated launch of the new Hazel Iris album  " Nine Sisters " at St. Bartholemew the Great Church at Smithfield London.

This looks as if it should be an amazing evening with the launch of the album with many first rate musicians , plus performances by other artists , and even a puppet show.. !

In anticipation of this Hazel has released a video of her new single .   A Prince.

This should be one of the music highlights of the year, and hoping to see a few of us there.   :)

Performances / Re: Rough Trade - London, England, UK - September 5th, 2018
« on: September 06, 2018, 08:51:00 PM »

A really good night at Rough Trade...  A powerful and intense set by Anna , including a beautiful Swimming Pool and away.
A decent amount of us turned up and it was great  to see some old faces ...

General Discussions / Re: Thoughts on the 3rd album
« on: September 02, 2018, 09:36:22 PM »
Listened to Hunter , overall I think it is an excellent, powerful. beautiful album with some inconcistencies.
This is obviously a far more commercial album than the previous two, and to me some of the originality has been lost , which  attracted a lot of us to Anna in the first place...

There are some really outstanding tracks including Hunter, Swimming Pool, Wish, Away , Eden, but also some weaker tracks, including Alpha and DBTG which I don't like at all... ,

Anna has used the album to express her views on gender, feminism etc, whether this will resonate with the majority of her fans, only the album sales will reveal.

But  this is an album of the superb musicianship as one would expect from Anna and Mally .  Anna's voice is by far the best we have ever heard throughout.

Agree with AC that the biggest loss is that of Mally's harmonium.  This added the distinctive sound to her music, and was a big visual draw to the live act.   I have been to many festivals where many people who had never heard of Anna ( unfortunately the majority ) were intrigued and drawn in by Mally with her Harmonium and assorted percussion instruments..

01. As a man [8/10]
02. Hunter [9/10]
03. Don't beat the girl out of my boy [2/10]
04. Indies or paradise [8/10]
05. Swimming pool [10/10]
06. Alpha [6/10]
07. Chain [9/10]
08. Wish [10/10]
09. Away [10/10]
10. Eden [10/10]

These are only my views, hopefully others will follow..

Just to remind everyone that Mally's gig is next Wednesday..  She has confirmed that Hana Pirahna will be playing with her and Hazel.  Also Mally will be playing some new compositions , including one for her harmonium !   We all miss seeing this on Anna Calvi's current touring regime, so this will be very exciting..  :)

Plus sets from Colonial Sun and Hazel Iris,  a night not to be missed... !

Mally has another of her  Blind Dog Studios Gigs at The Others Stoke Newington  N16 5SA , London,  on August 15.

With sets from Mally Harpaz, Colonial Sun and Hazel Iris , this is sure to be another great night.

There will be some special guests, and there is a strong rumour the amazing Hana Pirahna will be there again with her violin and Harp  !..  Also a possibility that Mally might bring her harmonium along !. ..   So plenty of reasons to go ,as well as seeing some really top  rate music in a friendly , intimate setting...

Really looking forward to this  :)

Get  your tickets early, as its sure to sell out.

News & Interviews / Re: Anna , New album and Tour

Thanks AC for the links.  I checked MOJO and can see nothing about Anna Calvi, so not sure what the Tweet was about..

I will upload the Q magazine interview, although again there is very little information about the musical content of the new album, apart from a brief part at the end.  Mostly a repeat of Anna,s agenda and manifesto..    Hopefully we might eventually learn something about the recording of the album, why there seems to have been a change in musical direction from the orchestral path she seemed to be following, who was involved, why has Mally's harmonium been dropped from the live show, why she chose to record at Konk Studios etc, etc...

News & Interviews / Hazel Iris EP ' Golden ' out today...
« on: June 29, 2018, 10:23:04 AM »

Hazel Iris has her new EP ' Golden ' out today, inspired by her California home.

A brilliant set of quirky, beautiful songs written by Hazel, and performed by her amazing band , including Mally on drums.

This is really top rate music, which does'nt require any ' manifesto' or explanation to prove its worth.

Give it a listen, and try to get to see Hazel at Mally's gig at The Victoria , Dalston next Wednesday

Performances / Re: Heaven - London, England, UK - June 19th, 2018
« on: June 21, 2018, 03:48:41 PM »

There were a lot of us in Heaven on Tuesday night to see the first UK show of the new ' Hunter ' material and Anna,s first performance with her Band for her fans in two years , not including the 'Private ' Burberry show.
And we were not dissapointed....  The show featured a catwalk on which Anna tore up and down, with a microphone at the end.  Anna's show is far more theatrical now  with guitar bashing, rolling on the floor and interaction with the audience . I thought this was very effective  and added to the spectacle..

The new material was excellent featuring a lot of incredible guitar work , very much back to the old Anna !.  The band was just a 3 piece with Alex on Drums and Mally on Keyboards , Percussion and Bass guitar , but no Harmonium !!.  A very pared back, sparse,  sound which I thought was far better, with some very very tight powerful intergration.  The music now seems to be far more a collaboration between Anna and Mally now.  There is no doubt that Mally is equal to Anna in musical brilliance and they produced an amazing vortex of sound between them with Alex providing a tight foundation.
Anna has always been at her best with her own band, and this proved it.  No tedious , boring collaborators tonight !!

The new material is probably ' heavier ' than we were expecting, but it was very dynamic and exciting. It will be interesting to see if this is captured on the album.

The set featured some old standards ,Desire , LWBL, etc, all re-arranged to a simpler , tighter, pattern highlighting Anna's guitar with precise , tight, backing from Mally ,mostly on Keyboards...

At the end of LWBL we launched our 'calling - card 'red rose-assault onto the stage, which seemed to go down well.

This was a really triumphant return for Anna and her band to a sold out Heaven... The crowd loved it, and lets hope the upcoming tour will be a success and give Anna the recognition as a great artist which she deserves.

As Substandard posted there has only been one fairly mediocre review from The Guardian so far... I really hope that we are not going back to the same old problem which has held back Anna's career for years ..... She and her band put 100 % effort into the music, but are then completely let down by her Management and PR  who do nothing to promote her gigs before or after.. It should have been her managers job to ensure that there was a good representation of the press there to give good coverage of the comeback concerts.. We all saw Hiroki strutting round, full of his own importance on Tuesday !!.. Why Anna keeps him on as her manager is completely beyond me !

There is now a two month gap before the album is released and the promotion momentum will have to be kept up to keep the public interest going  !
But anyway, Anna is back with a new exciting and powerful show...

Thanks AC for all your coverage of all the shows..

Evidently there was a very strict no photos, video, or recording regime at Berghain  which was heavily enforced... Only an odd sneaked Instagram shot has got out..

Everybody who went was absolutely blown away by the ferocity and intensity of the new show.  Anna was performing on a catwalk type stage, coming out into the audience...

Only a three piece band.  Anna , Alex and Mally, who was as amazing as ever.
First impressions were that the new material was excellent, and the single is not representative of the new album...…!

Tonight its Paris, and lets hope we have more to share.....

After a far too long break Mally Harpaz returns with her Blind Dog Collective for another gig at The Victoria Dalston on 4th July.

Another impressive line up with Mally, Velodrome and Hazel Iris.  !!

This will be a night of  of amazing music in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere ..

Really looking forward to it !

Although I am sure we would all welcome this AC.   .. I think its  more likely it will be the  announcement of a single or the release date of the highly anticipated new album.....

This will just be ahead of the three gigs in Berlin, Paris and London which will be the first time the new material is played before an audience...

This is all very exciting, and the first time Anna has played a gig with her  band in front of her fans for nearly two years !

Looking forward to seeing  what the new music will be like in London...
