Anna's film recommendations
« on: November 22, 2013, 09:03:43 PM »
Have you guys watched any films Anna has recommended in interviews? Share your thoughts/reviews here.

I tried to watch My Own Private Idaho, with Keanu Reeves and River Phoenix, but I couldn't finish it. To say that I think she has interesting taste would be one way of putting it...

I haven't finished it either. I really need should :/

I watched Melancholia and I Am Love when they were first released. I really loved Melancholia and I just thought it had some of the most beautiful cinematography. I also found it hit quite close to home, as the relationship between the 2 sisters closely mirrored the dynamics between my sister and I at the time I saw it.

I don't know how I feel about I Am Love. I liked it and it's a beautiful film and Tilda is amazing of course, but I still found it a bit empty.

Ok this is a weird one, but ages ago Anna tweeted about watching this documentary, so I watched it. It's a few years old now, but the points it makes about climate change are still relevant and it was really disturbing at times.

She recently posted a picture of Mulholland Drive too, have you guys watch it?
It's really haunting and fascinating, such a unique movie.

I love that movie. I really wish I could work out what all of David Lynch's clues mean that he gives inside the dvd cover. Has anyone had progress with that?

She also posted a picture from the excellent documentary "Paris is burning". Which was a confusing coincidence as I watched it for the first time only a few days earlier and talked about it to my friends a make them watch it!

There would be millions of things to discuss about it. I will, later, if you want to. In the meantime I hope you'll find it as interesting as I did.

Here it is:

Mulholland Drive is such an amazing film. I actually worked as an usherette in cinema (years ago) when this film was new and ha ha I loved to watch a bit confused people after they saw the film. One day just before the ending credits something went wrong (technical issues) and it stopped just before the credits should start... lol people were waiting for the end of the film and I was like: "Sorry, everyone, but believe me, that's it. It's the end of the film. Only thing you'll see now is the ending credits. We're working on it." And they were like no way - this couldn't be the end... I bet some of them still think they didn't see the ending.

Anyway, I love some films she posted pictures from. Like beginning of Melancholia is stunning! And I'm glad she also posted pictures from Donnie Darko and Bufallo '66. Gallo's Bufallo '66 is really good film. I saw it quite a few times - must rewatch it again soon though. Both Gallo and Ricci are great in it.

About Paris Is Burning - for me it's about things everyone wants really: to be admired, loved, having fun and most importantly not to be alone! That's the best thing having people who understand you and care about you and of course you about them... I know I simplified it a lot, sorry

I'll have to check a few of these out.

I thought that Buffalo 66 was self-indulgent shite however  :o

I've seen that one. It was good, but I have to rewatch it because I was unable to stop focusing on how much Keanu Reeves annoyed me. Yeah,  I have an unexplainable hatred for Keanu Reeves. ::) It's always been that way.
