You know you're an Anna Calvi fan when...
« on: December 31, 2013, 01:47:38 AM »
It's a classic "You know you're a fan" thread. I remember seeing an excellent tumblr post by Molly and Chris about it, but I'm afraid I can't find it at the moment.

So, you know you're an Anna fan when:

1. You've listened to her albums so many times that your family make disappointed grimaces every time you happily announce it's time to listen to Anna again. Even if 95% of the time you listen to her on headphones, so they have barely heard anything.
2. You named your home wi-fi network "AnnaCalvi" because you figured it possible that your neighbors would see it, google the name, and fall in love with her music.
3. You have pictures of her set as wallpapers, lock screens, etc. on every device possible.
4. You tried saying something to her during a live gig and failed miserably.
5. You've seen the Calvi Coat of Arms, and you think Anna should be a queen.
6. You can't afford to buy any other artists' albums because you spend everything on Anna's CDs, LPs, and singles.
7. Seeing the chord she was holding, you can tell which song she was playing when a given picture was taken. Well, at least sometimes.
8. You know every single song out there that features Anna in any way.
9. You get excited when you see new pictures of Anna.
10. You tried frozen peas because of Anna and loved it.
11. You've seen tutorial videos with techniques to steam clothes while wearing them without the intention to do it yourself.
12. The Anna Calvi fan community is your favorite fan community ever.
13. Every time someone compliments Anna and her music, you feel strangely proud.
14. You play the Jezebel drum intro wherever you go. Usually, you use your fingers against hard surfaces, which results in your hands hurting like hell.
15. You do the same with the Suzanne & I intro.
16. You've got some pictures of Anna on your bedroom walls because why the hell not.
17. Your friends tell you there hasn't been a single conversation in a long time in which the name "Anna" didn't appear at some point.
18. You never fail to make a reference to Anna, regardless of the subject discussed. Many references go unnoticed because they are only references in your own mind.
19. You've got your favorite Anna outfits and hairstyles, but you would never dare imitate her style.
20. You feel protective towards Anna, and you get mad when someone disrespects her.

I'm waiting for yours!

I loved this: quite a bit rings a bell with me .... But thanks also for the link to the Calvi family crest: obviously these are commercial sites, intended to sell stuff to - particularly American - people who have, or liked to think they have, some family link, but this seems to have interesting and credible material. I had assumed that the family name had something to do with "skull" or "bald"(!) i.e. that it derived from the Latin calvus; there was a 1st century Roman poet called Licinius Calvus. But a derivation from the place name obviously makes sense, so we needn't worry that Anna will one day revert to her family type and go bald!

I suppose, also, for a somewhat macabre Anna-Trivia-Quiz question, we could ask what links Anna to Golgotha, since the English-from-Latin version of "The Place of the Skull' is Calvary. Maybe one for Good Friday. Or not....

21. The only piece of post you get on New Year's Eve is a ticket for an Anna Calvi gig. True story. ;)

The original may well have vanished during my meltdown... I'll try and find a copy and post it!

22. Any kind of socialising involving a captive audience (or what some might call friends) and alcohol inevitably ends in a highly emotional rant about how disappointed you are that none of them have gotten into her, because "she's the best musician alive at the moment, and if you'd just let me show you one more video...". Much eye-rolling and exchanging of bored looks occurs, and then then when they don't listen anymore you find a quiet place to listen to Anna by yourself for a while.

23. You incessantly pester your bandmates in person - or online every time they pop up on chat - sending them an uncool amount of links to every Anna song you want to cover. And they never learn them, because your enthusiasm is too overwhelming.

(...Or is is just me? Guys?)

Thankfully, my friends tend to like Anna. Well, it's good for them, because disliking Anna and being around me is a really bad combination.

24. Your favorite procrastination method is browsing through videos and pictures of Anna for no particular reason.

25. You're listening to a live interview on the radio and know how Anna is going to answer the questions before she speaks. :)

Which could also mean that the interviewer is asking the same dumb, obvious questions that Anna regularly has to deal with. I must say, she does give her answers with remarkable good grace!
I was thinking of starting a 'what's the dumbest interview/review you've come across?' Strand, but that might be regarded as uncharitable ....

You want the dumbest interview I've come across? Here you go: http://muzyka.onet.pl/alternatywa/anna-calvi-wywiad/hlqtb

I am ashamed it's a Polish interview, truly. Apparently, this idiot had no idea who he was talking to. No wonder, however, as he most likely had to interview dozens of people that day. I just don't understand what the purpose of such actions is. Why even bother asking many people dumb questions if, instead of being completely useless, you could actually prepare something worthwhile for the selected few. He's so clueless that he doesn't ever realize what he says to her is quite offensive. Punk? Really? Go die in a dark hole, fiend. Now that's uncharitable...

Which brings me to...

26. You swear you will go berserk if you stumble upon one more interview in which Anna is being pestered about how she befriended Brian Eno, who her guitar idols are, when she started playing guitar, what kind of guitar she has (?!), how it is possible she can speak so softly and sing so loudly, what it is like to be a female musician, who her parents are, who her favorite artists are, etc.

27. You hate when someone insists on passing useless information to you when you just want to enjoy Anna's music, and no attempts to tell them that you do not wish to listen to them work.

Haha, oh dear... The thing with interviews it that often, the interviewers aren't looking to provide new information to fans, they're trying to present a whole picture to their own readers/listeners who may be unfamiliar with the artist's work, and preferably in the artist's own words/ in a direct reply. Yes, whilst they -could- just copy and paste the information from a billion other interviews, they'd rather have their own personal piece of repetition.

Of course, it always depends on what type of show/publication they're at, and their target audience- some are much more interested in looking for new things, with an audience who may already know that artist. I just meant, it isn't always to do with the laziness of the interviewers- only mostly. ;) But well, that's only one aspect of it, and I do agree that they could maybe do a bit more research and try to make it interesting, both for the artist and the audience!

I agree, of course, about trying to familiarize a certain audience with the artists journalists conduct interviews with, and it's only reasonable to do so, at least for a time. However, the thing with Anna is that I'm not sure she is ever going to be "famous" enough not to be treated like this. What I mean is that maybe the interviewers will keep on assuming no one has heard of her, and thus they will not risk straying to questions about something else than basic information. It's a bit tiresome not only for us, but for Anna herself as well, I suppose. Personally, I always prefer hearing a deeper and more complex interview to a simple one, as I believe artists tend to have interesting things to say, and if I want to learn about the "obvious," I can always google it. Anyway, that's my take on it.

Well if she gets bored of tedium and repetition then tough tits quite frankly - that's work for you!

Right, back to the grindstone...
